DENVER—A Greeley woman serving a life sentence without parole for fatally shooting her former lover’s wife is seeking a hearing on her complaint that her legal counsel was ineffective.

Shawna Nelson has also filed legal documents to drop her appeal of her first-degree murder conviction.

Nelson maintains her innocence in a letter to Weld County District Judge James Hartmann that was obtained by Denver’s KUSA-TV.

Nelson, a former police and sheriff’s dispatcher in Weld County, was convicted last year of shooting Heather Garraus outside her workplace in Greeley in 2007.

The victim’s husband, former Greeley police officer Ignacio Garraus, had an affair and a child with Nelson. He broke off the relationship with Nelson a month before the shooting.
