Shannon Bauer of Boulder got a call July 31 that her older brother, Shane, was being detained in Iran.
“For me, the hardest part is not being able to talk to them,” Bauer said of the last 50-some days.
The last time Bauer heard from her brother was in July, when he and his girlfriend, Sarah Shourd, were in Iraq for a week-long vacation.
Shane Bauer and Shourd had been living in Syria for the past year. Shourd was teaching English there, and Shane Bauer was working as a freelance photographer and journalist.
“Shane and Sarah both love different cultures and love traveling, and Shane has spent time in the Middle East before,” Shannon Bauer said.
“What we’ve heard was they were hiking, that they allegedly strayed across the border, the unmarked border, and that’s all we know,” she said.
Josh Fattal, a college friend, was with the couple at the time and also is being detained for crossing the border into Iran.
