SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—A Nebraska insurance company has asked a South Dakota judge to rule on a lawsuit filed by the widow of a record-breaking Sioux Falls high school basketball coach.

Micki Tibbetts filed the complaint against United of Omaha Life Insurance Co. on grounds it wrongfully denied an $83,000 life insurance claim for her husband Fred Tibbetts, who died of colon cancer in 2008.

The company said it doesn’t have to pay because Tibbetts was already disabled when the policy took effect and filed a motion for summary judgment.

Tibbetts had the most wins of any coach in South Dakota girls’ basketball when he died.

His son, Nate Tibbetts, coached the Sioux Falls Skyforce before being named coach of the another NBA Developmental League team, the Tulsa 66ers.
