DENVER—Grocery workers around the state are still voting, but unionized Safeway workers in the Denver area have voted to reject the grocery chain’s latest contract offer and to reauthorize a strike.

Denver-area Safeway workers represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 voted Tuesday. On Monday, Denver-area union members who work at King Soopers rejected a similar offer from King Soopers.

The union has been negotiating new contracts for about 17,000 workers at Kroger Co.’s King Soopers and City Market chains, Safeway and Albertsons. King Soopers, City Market and Safeway workers are voting on contracts through Oct. 6. Albertsons workers don’t have votes scheduled yet.

The companies and workers say they hope to avoid a strike.
