Chris Carpenter didn’t get his 17th victory Friday night, but he proved why he’s a favorite for the National League Cy Young Award. The Cardinals right-hander pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits. His ERA dipped to 2.30.

While his teammates had trouble squaring it up against Carpenter, Troy Tulowitzki kept rolling. He extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fourth-inning single and smoked another single in the sixth. During the streak, Tulo is hitting .417 (15-for-36).

Rockies manager Jim Tracy doesn’t get off the bench to argue very often, but he lodged a bitter complaint in the eighth.
