National Public Lands Day. In honor of this nationwide event today, entrance fees at all national parks will be waived, volunteer service projects are planned, and there will be free sneak preview screenings of Ken Burns’ new documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” at all national park visitors centers. At Rocky Mountain National Park, volunteers will build a new trail along the Continental Divide, and the film will be on view throughout the day. At 6 p.m., Rocky Mountain PBS and will celebrate Burns and his new documentary with a free screening at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder. Safety Saturday. Fires and burns are a leading cause of injury and death at home, especially for children. With Fire Safety Month around the corner, the Home Safety Council, Lowe’s and West Metro Fire Rescue are teaming up to host a safety celebration to teach families how to prevent fires and other common home injuries. During the event, West Metro Fire Rescue will conduct a live side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration to show how a typical home fire becomes deadly in three minutes or less.
