The Rapids announced Friday that wingers Jacob Peterson and Jamie Smith will miss the remainder of the Major League Soccer season because of injuries.
Peterson tore his anterior cruciate ligament early in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with San Jose and is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.
Smith, who has played in just four games since joining the team in August from his native Scotland, was injured Aug. 30. He was scheduled to return if the Rapids reached the playoffs, but the decision was made Friday to shut him down for the year.
Help on the flanks will have to come from within, as MLS rosters were frozen Sept. 15.

Liu 14th after short program.
Chaochih Liu of Colorado Springs stood 14th after the short program of Friday’s Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany, but is only three spots from making her Chinese Taipei Olympic team.
Liu, a junior at Cheyenne Mountain High School, finished with a 41.72. She must finish in the top six to earn an Olympic spot. However, five of the girls in front of her, including first-place Alissa Czisny of the United States, are not seeking Olympic spots and are not counted against her in the standings.
“I’m really pleased with where we’re at,” said Liu’s coach, Eddie Shipstad. “She’s more comfortable with the long than the short.”
She did a clean triple toeloop and triple Salchow but missed a double axel. Ahead of her are Cheltzie Lee (42.34) of Australia and Isabelle Pieman (43.36) of Belgium. The long program is today.
“If she skates a clean program, she should be going,” Shipstad said. — John Henderson
NCAA rules Wyoming’s Bouëdo must sit.
Arthur Bouëdo, a 6-foot-2 guard from France, will have to sit out the first 14 games of Wyoming’s basketball season after the NCAA ruled he played on a team in France that had a professional player on its roster.
Bouëdo was a walk-on as a freshman last season and is now on scholarship. He’s eligible to return for the Cowboys’ Jan. 6 game against Colorado State.
