KEARNEY—Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman was scheduled to speak to water officials from across the state at a time when some think he is trying to strong-arm them into tighter restrictions on irrigation. His administration has said that irrigation may have to be shut down in the Republican River basin during dry years to send Kansas water it is owed under a three-state compact. By Nate Jenkins.

LINCOLN—Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says backup free safety Rickey Thenarse is “probably out for a while” after injuring his right knee in Saturday’s 55-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Pelini said Monday on a teleconference with reporters that he didn’t know the extent of Thenarse’s injury. Pelini was unclear on how long Thenarse would be out, but he indicated the senior would miss the Oct. 8 game against Missouri in Columbia.
