Recipients of Carnegie Hero medals, which were awarded Tuesday:

—Mark John Thanos, 48, of Chesterton, Ind. and his father, John Mikel Thanos, 74, of Chesterton, Ind., drowned attempting to save an 11-year-old, 11, from drowning when he was caught in a flooded drainage ditch after heaving rains in Chesterton on Sept. 14, 2008. The boy escaped with their help.

—Jorge L. Orozco, 30, of Firestone, Colo., saved siblings, age 4 and 1, from burning after his tractor-trailer collided head-on with their mother’s sport-utility vehicle, which caught fire on Oct. 28, in Lucerne, Colo.

—Allen Drew Nelson, 29, of Brooklyn, N.Y., saved a 36-year-old woman from drowning when she lost consciousness and was separated from her inner tube on the Colorado River in Dotsero, Colo. on July 14, 2008.

—Mark Barnard, 21, of Regina, Saskatchewan; Michael David Landry, 21, of Regina, Saskatchewan; and Andrew Douglas Hilerman, 21, of Regina Saskatchewan, rescued a 25-year-old woman when her car went down an embankment, overturned and caught fire in Armstrong, British Columbia, on July 23, 2007.

—Timothy Tonkin, 44, of Smithtown, N.Y., helped save a 39-year-old man from drowning when his vehicle was sinking near a boat ramp in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. on Oct. 12.

—Robert Stanford Rand, 43, of San Clemente, Calif., helped save a 22-year-old woman who was threatening suicide atop a freeway overpass in Laguna Hills, Calif., on Aug. 10, 2009.

—Robert Villarreal Jr., 45, of San Antonio, Texas, rescued a 12-year-old boy from an assault by a mentally ill woman armed with a kitchen knife and a carving fork at his home in San Antonio on Jan. 23, 2007.

—John Augustus Baker II, 25, of Brunswick, Ga., and Joel Edmond Moody, 45, of St. Simons Island, Ga. saved three women, ages 19, 15 and 15, from drowning when they were stranded on a sandbar by the incoming tide at St. Simons Island on July 23, 2008.

—Robert P. Bercel, 46, of Richmond, Mich., helped to save a 76-year-old man from burning inside a van that caught fire after it crashed into a tractor-trailer in New Haven, Mich. on Sept. 28, 2007.

—Adam W. Lucas, 22, of Manchester, N.H. and Scott O. Clark, 43, of Nashua, N.H. saved a 54-year-old woman from burning after her car left an interstate and crashed, catching on fire, in Sugar Hill, N.H. on Sept. 6, 2008.

—Bruce A. Baxter, 58, of Petaluma, Calif., rescued an 87-year-old woman from her burning doublewide mobile home in Petaluma on Dec. 22.

—Rosetta M. Albright, 47, of Sapulpa, Okla., died saving a 3-year-old girl from a fire in the girl’s family’s mobile home in Sapulpa on Nov. 17.

—Tanya M. O’Donnell, 17, of West Harrison, N.Y., helped save a 10-year-old girl who was swept from a sandbar near Chatham Harbor, Mass. on Aug. 31, 2008.

—Joseph F. Kelly Sr., 55, of Levittown, Pa., died trying to save a 43-year-old man who got onto an interstate highway in his wheelchair. Kelly stopped his vehicle to help the man, but both were killed when they were hit by a truck as Kelly helped the man to the shoulder of the road.

—Jacob T. Carr, 33, of Jacksonville, Ore., saved his 70-year-old next-door neighbor from burning when the man’s house caught fire.
