FORT COLLINS — If heart-to-heart chats could cure receivers of the dropsies, Rashaun Greer would catch every Grant Stucker pass from here until the Thanksgiving weekend Wyoming finale.
Give Colorado State receivers coach and offensive coordinator Greg Peterson credit for trying. But Greer, a preseason all-Mountain West Conference receiver, has had an erratic season coming off a 1,114-yard junior campaign.
Although fifth in MWC receiving yards at 69.5 yards a game, Greer has missed some catchable footballs.
Instead of “could-have- been” CSU touchdowns Saturday against BYU, two were deflected for interceptions and set up BYU touchdowns and a 21-0 first quarter lead.
Greer took a seat the remainder of the day, but Peterson said if he practices well enough, he will be back on the field this weekend when the Rams play at Idaho.
Peterson said it is all about fundamentals. “Nobody is pointing fingers or panicking,” he said. “We are going to correct it. . . . We talked about being more aggressive to the football, and if he does that, he’ll make big plays.”
Utah ticket drive.
With the north end zone general admission sold out for the Oct. 10 homecoming game with Utah, CSU opened up the donor sections (between the 20- and 30-yard lines in the west stands). Tickets are $45, and fans must also buy Nov. 27 Wyoming tickets at $35.
MWC salutes Rembert
AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Junior defensive back Reggie Rembert was named MWC defensive player of the week for his spectacular game Saturday in Air Force’s 26-14 home victory over San Diego State.
Rembert led Air Force with seven tackles, forced a fumble, returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown and intercepted two passes.
“Maybe it helps me out that I’m so excited to be able to play,” said Rembert, who missed the Falcons’ first two games of the season while on suspension for breaking unspecified academy rules.
Good sign.
AFA coach Troy Calhoun called it a good step forward that quarterback Tim Jefferson was able to practice Monday, but he didn’t make an absolute decision on his starter for Saturday’s game at Navy. Jefferson didn’t play against San Diego State because of a right ankle sprain suffered the week before against New Mexico.
Connor Dietz, who stepped in for Jefferson in both games, also worked at quarterback.
Calhoun was optimistic senior defensive back Chris Thomas (groin) would play against Navy but still was uncertain about tailback Asher Clark (shoulder).
Bowl business.
The Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego and the MWC have agreed to a four- year deal, beginning in 2010.
