Former University of Colorado basketball and baseball player Ron “Wrigs” Wrigley died Sunday after a three-year battle with cancer, the school announced Wednesday. He was 55.

Wrigley played center for legendary Buffs basketball coach Sox Walseth from 1972-75, including all 26 games his junior and senior seasons. In his senior season, Wrigley averaged 11.3 points and led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.

He also lettered for the baseball team in 1974. Wrigley was all-city in both sports in high school in San Diego and was drafted by his hometown Padres, but he opted for college instead.

“Ron was much loved by the entire CU community and was successful in every sense of the word,” said longtime friend and college roommate Ed Shoen, who lettered at CU in football from 1972-74.

Wrigley is survived by his daughter, Alex, who lives in Phoenix.

Donaldson wins again.

Jamie Donaldson of Littleton has another honor to add to her two consecutive Badwater Ultramarathon titles. She is USA Track & Field’s athlete of the week after setting an American record in an ultradistance event in Canada last weekend.

Donaldson won the women’s 200,000 meters at the 28th annual Ottawa International 24 Hour Self-Transcendence Race and Masters’ 24 Hour Championship.

Donaldson obliterated the 18-year-old American record by completing 200,000 meters on the track in 21 hours, 1 minute, 28 seconds. The previous record of 21:08:47 was set by Sue Ellen Trapp in 1991. Donaldson won the 24-hour race by running 214.487 kilometers, well ahead of the runner-up, Andrew McLean of Ontario, who finished 202.943 kilometers.

Jayhawks trip Buffs in volleyball.

Karlina Garlington had 15 kills to lead the Kansas volleyball team (9-4, 2-2 Big 12) to a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) win over visiting Colorado (5-9, 0-5). The Buffs got 13 kills each from Kerra Schroeder, a career high, and Rosie Steinhaus.

CU mustered only a .182 attack percentage, recording 48 kills on 143 chances. KU was 58-of-140 for a .236 percentage.

“This Kansas team was relentless at times tonight and really pushed our offense to be more efficient,” Buffs coach Liz Kritza said. “When we were able to have our offense firing, we were able to control the momentum, which is progress for this young group.”

Rams edge UNC in five games.

Danielle Minch had 20 kills and Jacque Davisson added 16 (and two service aces) as host Colorado State held off Northern Colorado for a 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13) win.

The Bears rallied from 11-8 down in the final game to tie at 13. But then the Rams scored the last two points on a UNC service error by Kenzie Shreeve, who led the Bears with 17 kills, and a kill by Minch, who was set up by Evan Sanders. Sanders had 61 of CSU’s 66 assists.
