DENVER—Colorado lawmakers say they need to find alternatives for thousands of stereos, televisions and computers headed for the junk pile.

Lawmakers say recycling the gear will cut down on heavy metal pollution in landfills and reduce waste of valuable resources that could be easily recovered and reused.

They discussed options Friday including charging a deposit when customers buy potentially toxic electronics and recycling. They also are considering ways to regulate landfills to avoid pollution.
