VAIL, Colo.—Investigators say a solar- and battery-powered lighting system probably caused a fire that burned down a backcountry hut in the Vail area.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Department announced the likely cause Thursday, but investigators say they can’t rule out lightning as a possible factor.

The Fowler-Hilliard Hut burned on Sept. 20. No injuries were reported.

The hut was popular with hikers and skiers.

The 10th Mountain Division Hut Association plans to rebuild the structure. The association manages 31 such huts.
