Former Rockies pitcher Shawn Chacon was arrested in Greeley on a charge related to unpaid gambling markers in Nevada, according to the Greeley Tribune.

Weld County sheriff’s officials say they released him Tuesday, one day after his arrest, after learning Las Vegas authorities decided not to extradite him.

The Las Vegas Sun reported Friday that Chacon, a graduate of Greeley Central High School, faces a felony charge in connection with three bad checks written for $50,000 to Caesars Palace in March.

DU lacrosse gets early test.

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team, under new coach Bill Tierney, will get an early test when the Pioneers travel to New York to face defending NCAA champion Syracuse to open their season Feb. 19.

CSU, AFA picked for MWC cellar.

The Colorado State and Air Force men’s basketball teams were picked to finish eighth and ninth in the Mountain West Conference in a preseason poll of coaches. Wyoming was picked sixth. Brigham Young was the choice to win the MWC.

Texas Tech’s Gibson wins Farr Memorial.

Texas Tech’s Alex Gibson won the Heather Farr Memorial women’s golf tournament at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie. Her 3-under-par 213 topped Colorado State’s Kasey Claussen, who was second at 218. Denver’s Kelly Drack was fourth at 221.

Moore, Eaton ousted at Mid-Amateur.

Greenwood Village’s Janet Moore and Greeley’s Kim Eaton were eliminated from the second round of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur in Ocala, Fla.
