FORT CARSON, Colo.—A defense official says at least some of the eight U.S. soldiers killed in a fierce battle in Afghanistan last weekend were from Fort Carson in Colorado.

The official spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because notifications are still being made.

The official says some of those killed were from Task Force Mountain Warrior, which is the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson outside Colorado Springs.

Hundreds of insurgents armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades stormed two U.S. outposts in the mountainous Nuristan province on Saturday. It was the deadliest assault on U.S. forces in more than a year.

U.S. officials say the insurgents captured more than 20 Afghan security troops.
