Talk about shopping around. After a 10-year search, Brothers Redevelopment Inc. has a new construction yard.
In 1999, the city of Denver asked the nonprofit housing agency to think about vacating its equipment warehouse and volunteer dormitory on West 11th Avenue near the South Platte River to make way for a river-widening project.
An on-again, off-again property search ensued, with no satisfactory results. But Brothers Redevelopment went into high gear earlier this year when Denver said the current building had to be vacated by November.
“It may have taken us more than a decade to get here, but I think we found a site that’s ideal for our needs,” Brothers president Mary Ann Shing said of the replacement building at 5500 Logan St. in unincorporated Adams County.
Brothers moved this week to the building formerly used for auto repair and storage.
The difference between Denver’s $589,500 payment for the old site and Brothers’ $494,500 replacement purchase funded renovation of the building and the addition of a 35-bed dormitory for use by volunteers.
