Rich local history
Denver’s Whittier neighborhood boasts homes that were built by some of the city’s earliest agriculture, mining, railroading, education, manufacturing, retailing and government leaders. The Whittier Neighborhood Association hosts its annual House Tour on Oct. 18 to showcase some of these historic residences. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 on the day of the tour. Christmas comes early
The Junior League of Denver has moved up its annual Holiday Mart. This year, the 30th annual event will be Thursday through Oct. 18 at the Denver Merchandise Mart Expo Building (451 E. 58th Ave.). The four-day market features more than 150 retailers and artisans from Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region. This year also marks the JLDs 90th anniversary; in honor of that occasion, the organization has donated $90,000 to local community programs. Fundraisers such as the Holiday Mart and the newly released cookbook, “Colorado Classique,” make this generosity possible. Tickets are $8 and $15 at King Soopers or .
Celebrating 30 years
The Dora Moore School hosts its 30th Annual House Tour on Sunday, Oct. 18. The event will feature three homes along Denver’s Seventh Avenue Historic District plus two homes near East 10th Avenue and Marion Street, so that the tour forms a circular route through Capitol Hill with the school at the center. Among the stops is a Mediterranean Revival built in 1910, a traditional Denver Square, and the Zang Mansion, one of the city’s architectural treasures because of its original woodwork, beautiful stained glass, tapestry wall coverings and gorgeous light fixtures.
