DENVER—One night after blowing a two-goal, third-period lead and losing to Denver in the hockey season-opener, Vermont pulled away in the final period to notch a 6-4 win over the Pioneers on Saturday.

Brayden Irwin had two goals for the Catamounts (1-1-0) and Rob Madore made 30 saves as Vermont earned a split.

Denver’s Tyler Ruegsegger scored twice in the first period, but Irwin and Jack Downing answered for Vermont. The Catamounts took a 4-3 lead into the third period and got goals by Jonathan Higgins and Brian Roloff to ice it.

Adam Murray made 24 saves for Denver (1-1-0).
