AT&T announced today a substantial upgrade of its wireless network in metro Denver and along the Front Range.

The upgrade includes new 3G cell sites and deployment of additional wireless spectrum in the 850 MHz band. AT&T wireless subscribers in the metro area should experience improved network connectivity and better in-building wireless coverage, the company said.

“This substantial network upgrade is part of our commitment to deliver the nation’s fastest 3G connectivity along with the highest possible levels of service quality and reliability,” said Jace Barbin, vice president for AT&T’s wireless unit in the Rocky Mountain Region, in a statement.

Complaints about AT&T wireless service have surged in metro Denver over the past two months. Subscribers reported constant dropped calls, delayed voicemails and late text messages.

The company attributed some of the problems to the upgrade. Analysts said bandwidth-hogging iPhone users may have bogged down AT&T’s network. AT&T is the exclusive wireless provider for the iPhone.

The additional 850 MHz spectrum — which the company said generally leads to better in-building service — covers Fort Collins to Castle Rock, including Boulder, Denver and Greeley.

New 3G cell sites were added in Aurora, Boulder, Brighton, Castle Rock, Denver, Erie, Evergreen, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Morrison, Parker and Thornton.

Also, AT&T recently announced plans to further upgrade its 3G network nationwide with HSPA 7.2 technology, which would offer much faster mobile broadband speeds. The upgrades are planned to begin in the fourth quarter, with completion expected in 2011.
