COMMERCE CITY — If you ask any of the regulars at 80th Avenue Liquors, they will tell you it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
Robert, 46, lives with his sister and her family. He calls the time with them a fortunate gift during some years of misfortune.
Two years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer that started in his kidneys and spread to his bones. He has been undergoing chemotherapy, and so far, his body is responding well.
After the diagnosis, Robert lost his job washing dishes at a Denver hotel. Then he lost his apartment. Since moving in with his sister, he’s made a daily ritual of walking to 80th Avenue Liquors for a soda and a lottery ticket.
9News isn’t revealing Robert’s last name to protect his privacy until he meets with some lawyers and financial advisers. 9News did verify that his ticket matched Saturday’s winning numbers for the $5.4 million Colorado Lotto prize. It has a cash value of $2.7 million. Cheryl Preheim, 9News
