Two people were taken to a local hospital this morning after a fire in their Denver apartment.

The fire broke out at about 5:22 a.m. at 1086 Corona St., said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

A man who lives in the apartment called 911 to report the fire and told dispatchers that he had been burned, Champagne said.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke pouring out of the apartment and a mattress on fire in a bedroom.

Firefighters put out the fire and contained it to the one bedroom, champagne said.

The pair from the apartment, including the caller, were taken to a local hospital, mostly as a precautionary measure and to care for “pre-existing medical conditions,” Champagne said.

The man’s burns were not serious, Champagne said.

The apartment suffered heavy smoke and water damage and the couple will be temporarily displaced.
