Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Ron Sims said Wednesday that Colorado housing agencies will receive $618,000 of a $60 million grant designed to provide counseling for people having trouble dealing with real estate professionalswhether they’re purchasing, renting or avoiding foreclosure.

Sims, in Colorado for the Housing Colorado Now! Conference in Breckenridge, said the money will be shared by 22 housing counseling agencies in Aurora, Boulder, Cañon City, Colorado Springs, Commerce City, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Lone Tree and Westminster.

Counselors will help consumers avoid predatory lending practices, such as subprime mortgages, unreasonably high interest rates, unreasonably high fees or unaffordable repayment terms.

The individual agencies can be found on the HUD website, , or by calling the local housing authority. Mike McPhee, The Denver Post
