PHOENIX—Western Union said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that it expects to settle its legal battle with Arizona over money transfers to Mexico that the state contends are drug and immigrant smuggling money.
The Englewood, Colo.-based company said it had set aside $71 million to settle all outstanding legal issues in its fight against Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard’s effort to seize alleged illegal proceeds.
The company said it expects a significant portion of the money will be used to set up a not-for-profit organization to promote safety and security along the U.S.-Mexico border. Additional company investments to comply with relevant laws are also planned.
Goddard spokeswoman Anne Hilby says negotiations are continuing and no final agreement has been reached.
