It’s all downhill from here.
The World Cup ski season opens this weekend with its customary one-weekend event at Soelden, Austria, before teams return to training for this Olympic season.
Vail’s Lindsey Vonn begins her pursuit of a third consecutive World Cup overall title in Saturday’s giant slalom on a glacier high above Soelden. Bode Miller will be competing with the U.S. Ski Team in Sunday’s men’s GS after racing apart from the team the past two seasons.
Also expected to race this weekend are Aspen’s Jake Zamansky and Vail’s Sarah Schleper. The races will be telecast on Universal Sports (Channel 9.3 over the air, Comcast 250) at 8 a.m. and also can be seen on demand at .
After a pair of slalom races Nov. 14-15 in Finland, the World Cup resumes on a weekly basis in Aspen with women’s giant slalom and slalom Nov. 28-29. The following week (Dec. 4-6) the men will race downhill, super-combined and giant slalom at Beaver Creek.

GET OFF THE COUCH
What’s good for the Goose is good for the runner.
Celebrate the presence of fall on Saturday with a nature-based race around Quincy Reservoir in Aurora. The Galloping Goose 5K and 10K will circumvent the water in one of the city’s best natural areas.
The races, which start at 9 a.m., will be chip-timed and are USA Track and Field certified. Both should draw a good mix of casual runners and seasoned racers.

What we’d like to see
Another one for the road.
With two stops left on the AMA EnduroCross indoor off-road motorcycle racing series, the track is starting to narrow for the season-long points- chase race. And right near the top is Colorado’s Geoff Aaron, a Denver- based rider from Bailey who is coming off a victory this month in Columbus, Ohio.
Aaron is in second place overall, trailing points leader Taddy Blazu- siak when the tour stops Saturday at the National Western Complex in Denver.
In EnduroCross, riders must navigate a course abounding in boulders, sand, mud, logs and ponds.
Aaron, who has been racing motorbikes for more than 20 years, has made a late break for the series title, with Saturday’s race and the finale next month in Las Vegas left to sort things out.
