WASHINGTON — A Colorado artist has won a national portraiture competition and will have his work shown at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
The museum announced Thursday that Dave Woody, 37, of Fort Collins will collect the $25,000 prize and a separate commission. His photograph titled “Laura,” of a fellow graduate student, was among 49 finalists. The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition drew 3,300 entries, and an exhibit of the finalists opened Friday.
Second prize was awarded to Stanley Rayfield of Richmond, Va., for his painting “Dad.” Third place went to Adam Vinson of Jenkintown, Pa., for a painting titled “Dressy Bessy Takes a Nap.”
One notable entry depicts retired Sgt. Richard Yarosh, who was severely burned in Iraq. The Associated Press
