MONTROSE, Colo.—A portion of western Colorado’s Uncompahgre (un-kum-PAW’-gray) Plateau will be opened to mountain lion hunting after being closed since 2004.
The state Division of Wildlife closed the area to conduct research on the mountain lion population to help shape management policy. The study is ongoing and will include information on the cats, with and without hunting in the area.
The hunting season in the area west of Montrose is Nov. 16 through Jan. 31, unless the quota of eight mountain lions is killed before then.
Hunters must get a regular mountain lion license and a special permit to hunt on the research area. The permits are free and unlimited, and each is valid for 14 days.
