Sugar supplies for U.S. food and beverage makers are “totally inadequate,” and the government should immediately increase the quota for imported sweetener, according to consulting company Promar International.

The U.S., the world’s fifth- largest sugar consumer, needs an additional 850,000 to 1 million short tons of imports from countries other than Mexico in the year that began Oct. 1, Promar said Wednesday in a report.
