Texas’ Hannah Higgins scored the game-winner seven minutes into a second overtime Wednesday as the sixth-seeded Longhorns women’s soccer team upset No. 3 seed Colorado 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 championship in San Antonio.
It was the second double-overtime game between the teams in the past 10 days. Texas downed CU 1-0 early last week in Austin in the 102nd minute.
The Buffaloes (9-8-3) failed to advance after playing for the conference title last season. Texas (9-8-3) last won the Big 12 championship in 2007.
• League coaches named CU’s Nikki Marshall to the all-Big 12 first team. She is just the second Buff to earn first-team honors each of her four years, following Fran Munnelly (2002-05). Marshall is CU’s all-time leading scorer with 93 points and 42 goals.
Colorado freshman Amy Barczuk and Kansas’ Estelle Johnson, a senior from Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, were on the second team.
Pioneers open with win.
Freshman forward Kaitlin Bast scored two goals to pace the University of Denver women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Troy in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The second-seeded Pioneers (15-5-1) went ahead 1-0 on Bast’s headed-in goal in the 31st minute. Jessie Rogers also scored for DU, which is seeking a fourth consecutive Sun Belt title.
Mines’ Mitchell honored.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s soccer coaches picked Colorado Mines senior forward Kayla Mitchell the league’s player of the year. Metro State’s Becca Mays and Fort Lewis’ Jamie MacArthur joined Mitchell as unanimous selections to the all-RMAC first team. Fort Lewis’ Damian Clarke was coach of the year.
• Third-seeded Fort Lewis and fourth-seed Regis advanced through the first round of the RMAC Tournament at Auraria Field. The Skyhawks (17-2-2) earned a 3-0 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Regis (14-3-4) beat Mesa State 1-0.
Falcons’ Whitney finishes with a 67.
Air Force’s Tom Whitney carded a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii, and finished in 11th place, six strokes off the top. Whitney’s three-round 215 trailed co-medalists Alex Kang and Andrew Cooley of San Diego State (209). Air Force was 10th in the team standings.
