The University of Denver women’s soccer team advanced to its fourth straight Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game with a 3-1 win over sixth- seeded Arkansas State on Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla.
Bria Beardsley got DU on the scoreboard in the fifth minute, firing a shot from 40 yards out that curved over a defender and under the crossbar. Katy Van Lieshout got the assist.
Lizzy Carlson put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the 16th minute off an assist from fellow senior Mariah Johnston. In the 32nd minute, Kaitlin Bast took a crossing pass from Megan Flannery and headed it in.
Smith will remain with Buffs.
The University of Colorado women’s basketball team will keep senior guard Bianca Smith on its roster for the 2009-10 season after Tulsa released a year of eligibility back to her.
Smith originally signed a letter of intent to play for then-Tulsa coach Kathy McConnell-Miller in 2004. When McConnell-Miller moved to CU, Smith followed, but her first year of eligibility was lost in the transfer until Tulsa allowed it back.
Metro’s Emory honored.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s soccer coaches picked Metro State’s Steven Emory as the league’s player of the year. He is joined by Fort Lewis’ Tom Settle as unanimous first-team selections. Colorado Mines’ Frank Kohlenstein was coach of the year.
Hilbert reaches 500 victories.
Jacque Davisson had 11 kills, six digs and three blocks to lead the Colorado State volleyball team to a 25-17, 25-12, 27-25 sweep of Air Force at Moby Arena. It was the 500th career win for Rams coach Tom Hilbert.
Bears beat Montana in volleyball.
Kenzie Schreeve had 16 kills and eight digs as the Northern Colorado volleyball team beat visiting Montana 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21).
Denver spikers beat New Orleans.
The University of Denver volleyball team moved to the top of the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division with a 3-1 win (25-22, 29-27, 17-25, 25-19) over visiting New Orleans. Emmy Davidsmeyer recorded 22 kills for the Pioneers.
CU volleyball team defeated.
The Kansas volleyball team swept a Big 12 Conference match with Colorado (6-17) late Wednesday in Boulder. The Jayhawks (13-10) won 25-22, 25-23, 25-16.
Buffs beat Rams in hockey.
Colorado’s club hockey team beat Colorado State 5-3 at the Pepsi Center. The Rams took a 3-0 lead, but the Buffaloes, behind two goals from forward Max Myers, scored the last five, including an empty-netter. Colorado improved to 7-2 while the Rams dropped to 8-4.
