DENVER—Denver’s Catholic archbishop, Charles Chaput (SHAP’-yoo), will address federal health care legislation and abortion funding in a letter to be read at Mass this weekend.

Chaput says President Barack Obama failed to keep a promise to not provide public money for abortion in the health care plan. He’s asking Catholics to demand their representatives in Congress “respect Catholic and pro-life concerns.”

Federal law prohibits using federal funds to pay for abortions except to save a woman’s life and in cases of rape or incest.

The House version of the health care bill allows a public plan to cover abortions and gives federal subsidies to private plans that cover abortions.

Chaput’s comments came in a column in the Denver Catholic Register on Wednesday.
