As usual, most of the heavyweights in Class 5A advanced to Colorado’s volleyball tournament next weekend at the Denver Coliseum, including defending champion Cherry Creek.

Host Pine Creek (23-3) handled the Bruins 3-1 in the title match of Region D, with both advancing. In Region A, top-seeded Ponderosa (24-2) and Chaparral (22-4) advanced, giving the big-school field a southern metropolitan feel.

Longtime power Grandview (21-5) and Highlands Ranch (23-3) came through Region B, and Arapahoe (18-7) and Doherty (20-6) qualified through Region C.

4A: Cheyenne Mountain advances.

Top-seeded and defending state champion Cheyenne Mountain handled Broomfield 25-18, 25-10, 25-17 in the title match of Region A.

Cheyenne Mountain is 26-9, Broomfield 19-7.

Mullen (23-3) and Fossil Ridge (18-7) made it out of Region B; Roosevelt (25-1) and Pueblo West (19-7) advanced out of Region C; and Longmont (19-7) and Lewis-Palmer (21-5) rolled in Region D.

3A: Christian still cruising.

Colorado Springs Christian, the five-time defending state champion, had little trouble in regionals on its drive to a possible sixth crown.

The Lions (25-0) swept three games each from Frederick, Middle Park and Monte Vista. Middle Park (20-5) also advanced from Region A. Valley (25-0) and Platte Valley (17-7) qualified through Region B. Eaton (22-3) and St. Mary’s (22-3) came out of Region C. Bayfield (23-1) and Faith Christian (23-2) advanced in Region D, with Faith Christian downing Roaring Fork in a tiebreaker.

2A: Mix of qualifiers.

The classification’s state qualifiers are diverse and from several areas.

Burlington (19-5), Sangre de Cristo (23-2), Resurrection Christian (24-2), Akron (23-2), Dolores (17-5) and Mancos (21-4) are the six to join regulars Fowler (25-1), the defending champion, and Simla (20-4).

1A: Otis still perfect.

Otis improved to 25-0 to pace all qualifiers. Two- time defending champion Fleming (24-3) also advanced, as did North Park (21-5), Mountain Valley (22-3), McClave (18-7), Wiley (18-6), Hi-Plains (22-4) and Weldon Valley (16-11).

The state pairings will be released today for pool play beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. Saturday’s championship matches will begin at 7 p.m.
