The Big 12 and Big Ten announced Wednesday they will match teams in an annual women’s basketball challenge. To start, Colorado will host Illinois in December 2010. The Buffaloes will travel to Champaign, Ill., to play the Illini in 2011.

The home-and-home series will be called the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge, with seven games at Big Ten sites in 2010 and three at Big 12 sites.

CU’s Bardgett finishes 15th.

Colorado golfer Justin Bardgett bogeyed three of his first four holes and shot a final-round 78 to fall to 15th place in the men’s Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif.

Bardgett, a senior who was in second place after the first round, finished 11 shots back at 3-under-par 213. Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein earned medalist honors at 202. CU finished 11th in the team standings. Second-ranked Stanford won the team title.

All-RMAC volleyball team selected.

Nebraska-Kearney senior middle hitter Nikki Scott was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball player of the year by a vote of the league’s head coaches. She became the fifth Lopers player since 1992 to win the award. Scott was joined by Adams State middle hitter Darcy Jennings-Calkins and Metro State outside hitter Bri Morley as unanimous first-team choices for all-RMAC. Rick Squires of Nebraska-Kearney and Dave Fleming of Mesa State were selected the RMAC’s co-coaches of the year.

Sportswomen awards banquet set.

Sportswomen of Colorado is accepting nominations for its 36th annual awards banquet March 7. A panel will decide awards for outstanding achievement in a range of sports. High school, collegiate, professional, recreational and masters athletes are eligible. Coaches award and pioneer award winners will also be named.
