John Temple, former editor, publisher and president of the Rocky Mountain News, has taken a temporary job as a consultant for Greenspun Media Group, a multimedia company whose properties include the Las Vegas Sun.
In an e-mail Wednesday, Temple described his role with Greenspun, a family-owned company, as a consultant on “media issues.”
Michael Kelley, the Sun’s managing editor who will leave the newspaper by the end of the year, said that Temple’s primary charge will be to “organize a convergence” of all the newsrooms currently run by Greenspun.
“He’s looking at all editorial publications we have and to see how they can get into one newsroom,” Kelley said.
Greenspun Media Group, based in Henderson, Nev., owns and operates more than 30 publications, including Aspen Peak magazine, which reach a combined circulation of 27 million. The company also owns an interactive division.
Temple, who has been writing a journalism blog since E.W. Scripps closed the News on Feb. 27 after nearly 150 years in business, also said he’s leaving today for the Midwest, where he’s working on a different project, but did not elaborate.
I had the honor and privilege of working for Temple for nine years from October 1999 to the day the News closed. The Sun is lucky to have his guidance.
Kelley, 67, who lost his brother in the summer, told his boss, Brian Greenspun, that he was planning to retire this year.
During Kelley’s reign, the Sun won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for public service. Part of the company’s consolidation includes moving the Sun operations across the street to start implementing the publication company’s “convergence” by the end of the year.
Marshall’s steak escape.
Broncos star wide receiver Brandon Marshall has a tradition of taking his family to Elway’s restaurant in Cherry Creek for dinner after home games, he told ESPN The Magazine in the Nov. 16 issue.
The writer, Kenny Mayne, asked Marshall whether John Elway ever shows up to practice and “bosses you guys around, saying, ‘This is how it’s done.’ “
“Never,” Marshall said. He also said that he met the Hall of Famer for the first time this season.
“He was awesome. I was just like a little kid again,” Marshall said.
No. 15 also said he’s getting married June 19, with either Jaguars receiver Michael Sims-Walker, his former roommate at the University of Central Florida, or New York Giants tight end Darcy Johnson, who played with him at UCF, as his best man.
