ADOBE & PINES INN BED & BREAKFAST4107 New Mexico 68, Taos, NM 87557, 800-723-8267,

Rates: Standard rooms in the main lodge start at $98; suites with kitchenettes start at $195. Overnight parking is free.

Stay here if you: are looking for a quiet, relaxing, welcoming B&B that serves hearty, delicious breakfasts.

It’s close to: St. Francis of Assisi church and Ranchos de Taos, a third of a mile north. Taos Plaza is 4 miles north.

The rooms are: beautifully and uniquely decorated. Five are part of the 1830s adobe hacienda and its adobe additions, which serves the main lodge and the breakfast area, with the original vigas and wood-burning kiva fireplaces. The others open out onto a charmingly landscaped courtyard. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs with VCR/DVD players (the hacienda offers binders filled with DVDs available free for viewing), tile-lined showers with rain forest showerheads, and bathrobes and slippers. Some of the rooms have jetted tubs. The amenities include bath scents, candles and all-natural soaps. Puerta Cobre, the largest suite, has a two-person hot tub off the patio and a sitting room that includes a pullout couch. Look for your coffee, hot chocolate and tea to be well stocked daily, and any other needs to be met quickly and cheerfully. Free Wi-Fi.

They put all of the money into: maintaining and restoring this historic, 3-acre property, which has a stream running through it and a fruit orchard.

The bottom line: Owners Katherine and Louis Costabel used to be restaurateurs, and it shows. Breakfasts of pumpkin pecan cranberry pancakes with sweet, smoky bacon or homemade, fruit-topped cheese blintzes come with just-baked pastries and fresh fruit placed in elaborate designs around the plates. The property sports a Zen-style labyrinth for dropping your cares at the entrance, and chickens add fresh eggs and atmosphere, as do the goats, cats and dogs wandering around waiting to say hi. Your own pooch is welcome, as well. They also have connections to a reasonably priced group of massage therapists who offer their spa services on-site. Kyle Wagner
