DENVER—A federal magistrate judge has fined Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. $200,000 for violating a permit for how much bacteria it could discharge from a wastewater treatment facility in Fort Morgan.
The company also was sentenced Friday to pay $250 to a fund for crime victims, and it entered an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency on steps to prevent another violation. The steps include staff training, mechanical upgrades to its wastewater treatment operation, and reassignment of employees responsible for the violations.
Wastewater from Cargill’s meatpacking plant in Fort Morgan is discharged into the South Platte River.
The company pleaded guilty in September to two misdemeanor violations of its permit for discharges.
