EUGENE, Ore.—Andy Ogide had 24 points and Colorado State made 14 3-pointers in its season-opening 91-73 victory against UC Davis in the BTI Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.
Reserve forward Andre McFarland recorded career highs with 20 points and six 3-pointers—all in the first half. Dorian Green added 16 points for the Rams, who shot 56 percent from the field and made 14 of their 25 3-point attempts, which tied for the second-most 3-pointers made in school history and was just three short of the school record.
“Andre can really knock those down,” Colorado State coach Tim Miles said. “We were patient and we got a lot of open looks. Our guys understood immediately that were being rewarded for being patient.”
Mark Payne scored 19 to lead the Aggies (0-1). Joe Harden added 14 and 11 rebounds.
The Rams trailed 24-18 early in the game but went on a 19-4 run to take a 37-28 lead with 3:13 to play in the first half. The Rams hit five 3-pointers during that stretch—three by Green and two by McFarland.
“That was a concern coming in,” Aggies coach Gary Stewart said of the Rams 3-point shooting ability. “To their credit, they knocked down shots, and we didn’t do a good job getting out and challenging them.”
Colorado State went into halftime up 48-42 and led the entire second half, ending on a 17-4 run after UC Davis cut its deficit to seven, 74-67, with just under six minutes to play.
“We were able to get some stops at the end,” Miles said. “It was a good win.”
