The winner: Roy Webb, Salida:
This is Bent’s Old Fort on the Santa Fe Trail in southeastern Colorado. My family was privileged to participate in the March 1995 Winter Quarters living history. We lived in the fort for this three-day weekend, transported back to 1846. My wife and 12-year-old daughter assisted the historic character Charlotte, cooking three meals per day in the open fireplace kitchen. My 19-year-old son worked in the blacksmith’s forge, with my two younger sons, ages 17 and 15 (acting as Irish laborers), patching the stucco and doing any manual labor that was needed. I was participating as a trapper in period clothing and strict adherence to 1846 conversational subjects and verbiage (as there were rumors of war with Mexico).
