Denver residents can expect to see another 4 to 6 inches of snow today as a winter storm from Idaho continues its march southward.

But after what could be a foot of snowfall accumulation through this afternoon, the melt-off should start Monday, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 40s.

Steady flakes started falling Saturday afternoon, and forecasters predicted accumulation of as much as 6 inches through the evening, and then what could be another half foot through 5 p.m. today.

Forecasters expected as much as 16 inches of snow in the mountains through today.

When folks in the metro area peek out the window this morning, “things ought to be white,” said Kyle Fredin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.

A good day for sledding?

“I think it’s a pretty good bet,” Fredin said.

At Denver International Airport, runways remained open Saturday evening.

At one point Saturday night, eastbound Interstate 70 was closed at Floyd Hill following heavy snow and multiple accidents. Officials advised motorists to expect icy conditions along I-70 from Glenwood Springs to the Denver area and along Interstate 25 from Wyoming to Colorado Springs.

Elsewhere in the state, the Central City Parkway was closed briefly in both directions, and Colorado 119 had to be closed for multiple weather- related accidents.

Eric Escudero, a spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said 70 to 80 snowplows were in place throughout the state to keep roads clear.

CDOT officials reminded drivers to move over so snowplows can clear the roads and not to pass on the right or drive at high speeds.

Temperatures today in the metro area are expected to reach 30 degrees, with a low tonight in the 20s. A 20 percent chance of snow is predicted for this evening.

Sunny skies are predicted for Monday and mostly clear skies for Tuesday, with highs in the 40s both days.
