Richard Barrett, founder of Denver’s successful Knowledge Is Power Program Sunshine Peak Academy charter school, resigned suddenly last week, and students held a protest Tuesday.
Barrett, who was principal of KIPP Denver Collegiate High School and who started Sunshine Peak in 2002, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. A KIPP official said she could not talk about his departure.
Kaye Taavialma, who was academic dean of the school, has been named interim principal.
“We have a lot of hope in her ability to manage through this transition,” said Rebecca Holmes, executive director of KIPP Colorado.
Students held a small protest outside KIPP high school Tuesday.
