EchoStar Corp. announced Wednesday that Michael T. Du gan has been named the company’s president and chief executive, succeeding Charlie Ergen.

Ergen will remain chairman of Douglas County-based Echo Star, which develops and sells satellite-TV set-top boxes and was spun off from Dish Network in January 2008. Dugan previously served in several executive roles at the combined company, including president and chief operating officer, from 1990 to 2004. He currently sits on EchoStar’s board of directors.

“Mike was the chief architect behind the technological foundation for EchoStar and Dish Network, and I am pleased to welcome him back into the company he helped build,” Ergen said.

Ergen will remain chief executive and chairman of Dish Network, the country’s No. 2 satellite-TV provider. Ergen founded the satellite-TV provider, then known as Echo Star, in 1980. He remains the controlling shareholder of EchoStar and Dish Network.
