Richard Glen Strandlof will be released to a halfway house pending his upcoming trial on charges that he made false claims about being a decorated military veteran.

Strandlof, 32, is charged in U.S. District Court in Denver with five misdemeanor counts related to claims that he was a wounded Marine captain. Strandlof pleaded not guilty Monday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Watanabe told Strandlof on Wednesday that he is to remain in federal custody until Dec. 15, when a bed is expected to become available at the halfway house.

Strandlof is the first person to be charged in Colorado under the Stolen Valor Act. The act, signed into law in 2006, expands federal laws about unauthorized claims of earning military medals.
