GREELEY, Colo.—Jurors have convicted a Weld County builder accused in a mortgage fraud scheme that prosecutors say defrauded lenders and left several Greeley-area families in foreclosure.
Fifty-two-year-old Mark Strodtman was convicted Wednesday of racketeering, 11 counts of theft of at least $15,000, and 11 counts of forgery over home sales that went bad in 2005 and 2006. Homeowners said they were deceived into buying homes they couldn’t afford.
Strodtman was accused of failing to report kickbacks he paid to buyers in 11 home sales with artificially inflated prices. Prosecutors argued he led the scheme. Strodtman’s attorney, David Kaplan, had argued that Strodtman was responsible only for constructing homes.
Strodtman is to be sentenced Jan. 5.
