The parents of a 3-year-old shooting victim were arrested late last night after they gave conflicting accounts of how the child was injured.

The young boy was shot once in the leg and is in serious condition, according to Lt. Matt Murray, spokesman for the Denver Police Department.

Arrested were William Thalley, 29, and the child’s mother, Nicole Fernandez, 25. Thalley was arrested for investigation of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. Fernandez was arrested for accessory to child abuse – after the fact.

Police were alerted to the incident by officials at St. Anthony’s Hospital at 7:19 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived at the hospital, the parents indicated the child had been shot by an unknown man at Morrison Road and Lowell Boulevard.

Murray said further investigation showed the child had actually been shot by his father in the family home, located in the 3400 block of West Alaska Place in Denver.

Detectives were investigating the incident through the night after obtaining a search warrant for the home.
