It turns out there’s a ski country application to that old proverb about a window of opportunity opening after another one closes. Only it’s more like steep chutes opening when rolling groomers don’t.
In the aftermath of Purgatory/Durango’s recent announcement of a weekend-only (Friday-Sunday) schedule in early December this season, Silverton Mountain has decided to pick up the slack with additional midweek ski days for the month. For the first time in its 10-year history, Silverton will be open on Wednesdays, beginning with an early opening Dec. 2 for unguided skiing. Silverton Mountain had previously operated only Saturdays and Sundays for the first two weekends of December before ramping up to its normal four-day weekend schedule.
The experts-only ski area already has received several feet of snow. Operators plan to revert back to the traditional schedule once nearby Purgatory/Durango returns to midweek operating hours.
