LINCOLN, Neb.—Tyson Broekemeier ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and defending champion Aurora converted four of Omaha Skutt’s five turnovers into points to end a perfect season with a 34-21 victory in the Class B final Tuesday night.
The top-ranked Huskies (13-0) scored three touchdowns in the last 22 minutes to overcome a 21-13 deficit and win going away against the No. 2 Skyhawks (12-1).
Broekemeier carried 22 times for a game-high 135 yards, and he gave the Huskies the lead for good on a 1-yard sneak late in the third quarter. He also completed 13 of 21 passes for 172 yards.
“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our kids and their effort,” Aurora coach Randy Huebert said. “We made some plays and forced turnovers. That was huge in this game. Offensively, we were able to sustain drives, and we had a nice mix of the pass and run. Tyson did a great job of running our offense.”
Skutt’s Christian Dudzik, who had thrown one interception in Skutt’s first 12 games, was picked off three times. Jacob Shaffer intercepted two passes, returning one of them 58 yards for a touchdown.
“I saw an out route, jumped it and saw the ball going there, and I made a play,” Shaffer said. “I almost stumbled there, but I recovered.”
Dudzik ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns and hit 18 of 27 passes for 210 yards and another TD as Skutt scored the most points allowed by Aurora this season.
Skutt led 21-13 after scoring twice in the final 3:01 of the first half. But Broekemeier threw a 39-yard TD pass to Kyle McCarthy after Skutt’s Corey Stringer fumbled. Shaffer picked off Dudzik to end Skutt’s next series, and then Broekemeier’s 1-yard sneak and 2-point conversion pass put the Huskies up 27-21.
The Huskies have won 25 of their last 26 games.
“All the work we put in this year has paid off,” Shaffer said. “We’re going to try to win another one next year.”
