Colorado Rapids defender Jordan Harvey was among 10 players selected by the Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer expansion draft Wednesday.
Harvey was the Rapids’ first pick, ninth overall, in the 2006 supplemental draft. In five seasons with Colorado, he appeared in 45 games with 42 starts and recorded four assists. Harvey had a career-best season this year, when he was the only Rapids player to appear in all 30 games while also registering a career- high three assists.
Aggies sweep Buffs in volleyball.
In her last home match, Kaitlyn Burkett, the lone senior on the University of Colorado volleyball team, tied her career best with 14 digs, but CU (7-21, 2-17 Big 12) lost to Texas A&M (17-10, 10-9) 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-15).
McGrane, Eagles roll in CHL.
Ed McGrane scored the first two goals of the Central Hockey League game and added two assists, helping the Colorado Eagles rout the visiting Amarillo Gorillas 10-4. Aaron Schneekloth and Felipe Larranga also scored in the first period as Colorado built an early 4-0 lead.
The Eagles moved to within three points of Tulsa, which leads the CHL’s Northern Conference.
McCaffrey selected again.
For the second consecutive year, Christian McCaffrey, an eighth-grader from Castle Rock, was selected to play in the Football University Youth All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
The game for seventh- and eighth-graders, modeled on the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for star high school seniors, will be played Jan. 10.
RMAC salutes Western State wrestler.
Western State junior Charlie Alexander was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestler of the week.
Alexander, ranked No. 3 nationally among Division II heavyweights, posted a 10-2 victory over Jeremiah Constance, who wrestled unattached, to win the heavyweight division at the Northern Colorado Open tournament Sunday in Greeley. Alexander, 9-0 this season, was the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.
Big Sky honors UNC trio.
Northern Colorado placed three football players on the all-Big Sky Conference second team: cornerback Korey Askew, linebacker John Eddy and punt returner Ryan Lutz.
Beitzel’s effort rewarded.
Northern Colorado guard Devon Beitzel, a former Centaurus star, was named the Big Sky’s co-basketball player of the week with Sacramento State guard Sultan Toles-Bey.
Beitzel, a 6-foot-1 junior, was named the most valuable player of the Air Force-hosted Reggie Minton Classic last weekend after he averaged 22 points in the Bears’ victories over Texas Southern and Air Force.
