Beginning Tuesday, texting behind the wheel becomes illegal in Colorado.
The legislation came about after several deadly accidents in which drivers were texting instead of paying attention to the road. The law also will prohibit drivers under 18 years old from talking on the phone while driving. Some people, no doubt, will be unable to wean themselves from their habits but we hope the majority take heed so Colorado roads become a safer place.
And why wait until Tuesday? Put down the phone and drive.
Let the sun shine in. Thank goodness the folks at the Department of Homeland Security reversed course on their decision to hold a closed-door administrative hearing for former immigration agent Cory Voorhis. Voorhis lost his job after he allegedly gave information from a restricted federal law enforcement database to the campaign of Bob Beauprez, a 2006 Republican candidate for governor.Voorhis, who is fighting to regain his job, says he accessed the database with his supervisor’s permission. Voorhis was wrong if he indeed used the database for a political reason, but it’s also wrong if others were in on it and escaped punishment. The best way for the public to figure out exactly what went down is to allow access to the hearing. We’re glad the feds see it the same way.
