A Vail officer making what he thought was a routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 early Friday discovered that the motorist he pulled over had been stabbed.

The name of the victim, stopped by Vail Officer Mark Allen at 1:35 a.m. on eastbound I-70, was not released by police. The man was stopped for speeding and police noticed blood on his chest and hands. Police determined the victim had been involved in an altercation with his roommates at a home on Alta Circle in Vail.

During the fight, Javier Huicar- Villa, 27, of Vail, pulled a knife and stabbed the 33-year-old victim, police said. Huicar-Villa was later found near the Vail Village Transportation Center and arrested. The victim was taken to the Vail Valley Medical Center, where he was treated for multiple stab wounds and released.
