A Boulder school-bus driver involved in an accident Monday told officers he took a prescription medication to sleep, but toxicology tests will determine whether other drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Neither the driver, Robert Lecy, 62, nor any of the 17 students aboard were injured when the bus ran onto a sidewalk, scraped a utility pole and came to rest against a brick fence a few blocks from Boulder High School just after 7 a.m.

Police suspected drugs “based on his mannerisms and demeanor when speaking to officers,” said a department spokeswoman.

Lecy told a police officer he did not remember what happened just before the crash, but a passenger told police he slumped to the right, and other witnesses reported erratic driving, according to the Boulder police report.

Lecy was cited on suspicion of careless driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

The school district also is investigating, said a spokesman.
