VAIL, Colo.—Vail area businesses are hoping to get a boost from the Birds of Prey World Cup event, both during this week’s races and after.

The period in between Thanksgiving and Christmas is normally a slow time for the resort area. The races, which begin Wednesday, are expected to bring more athletes and more members of the media ahead of the Winter Olympics.

The event will be held at Beaver Creek and the resort hopes live primetime broadcasts of the races in Europe will also help convince people there to take ski vacations at Beaver Creek. It’s the only men’s World Cup event in North America and in Europe World Cup is as popular as baseball or basketball.
